Eco-Home Member Hotline Comments from Members Greetings, 'Just wanted to pass on word that I was able to order FSC certified redwood at the Monrovia Home Depot a little while ago. We needed wood to construct a shade structure and were surprised to find out that certified douglas fir doesn't seem to be available in southern CA. It was too late in the design process to have our architect and structural engineer redo the plans to accommodate redwood structural members so we settled on using certified redwood only for the 2x2's on top of the structure. We had engineering concerns since the shade structure was designed to support most of the modules for a 2.5KW solar array. We had time concerns because we were trying to complete the project by the end of the year. I was ready to rent a truck and pick up certified 2x4's in Paso Robles from Big Creek lumber (<http://www.big-creek.com>http://www.big-creek.com ). They were willing to truck the wood down from their northern CA mill to their southern-most retail location. Yet it turned out that I didn't need to travel that far. The Monrovia Home Depot happened to have some FSC certified 2x4's in their stacks one day while I was in that store looking for something else. There weren't enough of them and they weren't the right length but it turned out I could order what we needed. Bobby was my contact there (details below). She was very efficient and good at communicating the arrival status of the order. If I remember correctly it took about three weeks to take delivery. The 2x4's were priced competitively and came with what appears to be a valid chain of custody certification number through Capital Lumber Company. We had them ripped into 2x2's and they seem to be working just fine. 'Hope this helps others Contact: |
